AIM Dramatic Arts 2017

BLUE STOCKINGS by Jessica Swale

Directed by Peta Downes

Designed, Produced and Performed by the 2017 Bachelor of Performance Graduating Company

Why should a woman have to choose between love and knowledge?

It’s 1896 and Girton College at Cambridge University is the firstresidential college in Britain to admit women. Tess Moffat, Celia Willbond, Carolyn Addison and Maeve Sullivan arriveat Girton as capable, brilliants students who more than match their male counterparts, but soon learn they are not welcome at Cambridge.

The thought that they will be denied degrees and go home unqualified with the stigma of a ‘blue stocking’ – an unnatural, educated woman - spurs them on to fight the establishment and win the right to graduate.

Then Tess meets Ralph Mayhew, a Trinity College student who is charming and supportive of her with real prospects. Tess is faced with a dilemma. Should she sacrifice her hard-won education for this chance of a marriage or stay the course at Girton and be true to her heart and mind?

Jessica Swale’s contemporary take on life in the Victorian era, follows the funny and poignant journey of these Girton Girls as they overcome opposition from the academic establishment to try and change the future of education.
